Life: Biology Chapter 10 I. What are the Mendelian Laws of Inheritance Assumptions of inheritance: 1. Each parent contributes equally to offspring. Reciprocal crosses are when plants are crossed in opposite directions. Ex: males with white flowers are mated with females with red flowers, and in a complementary cross, red-flowered males and white-flowered females are mated. A. Mendel brought new methods to experiments on inheritance Mendel’s extensive preparation, fortunate choice of experimental subject, meticulous execution and imaginative yet logical interpretation gave him very good results. B. Mendel devised a careful research plan -Mendel chose common garden pea because of its ease of cultivation, feasibility of controlled pollination and availability of varieties with contrasting traits. He controlled pollination, fertilization by manually moving pollen. Mendel’s plants naturally self pollinate (female organs of each flower receive pollen from male organs of same flower). -Mendel studied characters, heritable traits and true-breeding (the observed trait had to be the only form present for many generations; if white mate with white, only white is born). -anatomy of a pea flower: stigma is where the pollen lands, anthers are the sites of pollen production, stamens are male sex organs, and ovary is female sex organ. C. Mendel’s first experiments involved monohybrid crosses Hybrid refers to offspring of crosses between organisms differing in one or more traits i. Rejection of blending theory: Mendel’s crosses proved that blending is wrong. ii. Support for the particulate theory: discrete particles that occur in pairs segregate during gamete formation and are responsible for inheritance. According to his particulate theory: the units of inheritance separate in production of gametes and combine to a zygote. D. Alleles are different forms of a gene E. Mendel’s first law says that the two copies of a gene segregate -law of segregation or Mendel’s first law: the fact that when any individual produces gametes, the two copies of a
