Study Guide Chapter 1 In order to do well on the exam you need to be able to: Explain what is a law and what is a theory. Substance classification: 1. Distinguish between atoms and molecules.Chemi 2. Classify a substance as element, or compound. Recognize that elements can be either atoms or molecules (e.g. He and H 2 are both elements). 3. Convert between the name and symbol of the first 36 elements in the periodic table (rather than the first 50 elements!).S 4. Write the formula of a compound given the number and types of atoms that it contains. 5. Stoichiometric claculations: 1. Calculate the molecular mass of a compound from the atomic masses of its constituent atoms. 2. Recognize that the molar mass (M m ) of a substance is its atomic or molecular mass expressed in grams. 3. Know what a mole is and use Avogadro’s number to calculate the number of atoms or molecules in a given number of moles. 4.
