What is the difference between a covalent bond and a hydrogen bond? Which bond is stronger? Can you speculate why this is the case? A covalent bond is a very strong bond that involves the sharing of electrons. It takes 110 kcal. to break the bond. An H-bond is a weak bond that occurs between a Hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom [O or N] and a second electronegative atom [O or N]. The partial positive charge on the Hydrogen is attracted to the partial negative charge on the O or N. No electrons are shared. It takes 3-7 kcal. to break an H-bond. 2. Why is it that Nitrogen (N) can be involved in hydrogen bonds but Carbon (C) cannot? Nitrogen can be involved in Hydrogen bonds because it has a pair of unshared electrons [nonbonding] while Carbon does not. Therefore, Nitrogen is more electronegative. 3. We discussed many types of functional groups in class. Which functional groups can ionize? Which functional groups can H-bond? What types of functional groups do you see in fatty acids? How about the amino acid Tyrosine? In the cell, carboxyl, and amino functional groups (not amide!) can ionize. Hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino, and amide functional groups can H-bond. Hydrocarbons and carboxyl functional groups are found in fatty acids. Carboxyl, amino, phenyl, and hydroxyl are the functional groups found in the amino acid Tyrosine. 4.
