MEDICAL OFFICE MANAGEMENT, HEALTHCARE LAWS, AND AUDITS 2 What is the role of the medical manager in risk management in a medical office? How are medical records, and mal practice lawsuits a part of risk management? The medical manger has to oversee all risk management issues and make sure those risk are avoided at all cost. The medical manger has to act on any threat. Medical office managers have to make sure the patient is physical safe as well as their information is safe. They have to oversee all medical records and audits as well as making sure the environment is safe for the patients. Medical office managers have to make sure that they protect the patients from fraud and abuse. Medical records are an important part of risk management. As a medical professional we have to insure that our patient’s information is correct as well as safe. Medical records also record what was done according to John Vargo an MD he states, “Thorough documentation is one the cornerstones of a successful risk management program. The quality, completeness and legibility of documentation are important. A common error medical personnel make is to ask or do something, but not record it. The adage “if it isn’t documented, it wasn’t done” is an important concept to keep in mind. In fact, the public’s perception of a particular medical practice may be based on the quality of its records” (Vargo, n.d.). Malpractice law suits are a huge part of risk management. It is our responsibility to make sure everyone in our clinic and or office is not putting their self in harm by not fallowing procedures and or protocol. Malpractice is a huge importance in the world of risk management. “Medical malpractice is a component of tort law, which is defined as a “civil wrong.” Elements of tort law include the following: Duty, Breach of duty, Causation, Damages” this is something we have to identify quickly in our clinic and correct it quickly (Vargo, n.d.). What do the following laws have to do with Risk Management and why does a medical manager need to know these laws? “Risk management refers to strategies that reduce and minimize the possibility of an adverse outcome, harm, or a loss. The systematic gathering and utilization of data are essential to loss prevention. Good risk management techniques improve the quality of patient care and reduce the probability of an adverse outcome or a medical malpractice claim. This core curriculum outlines the attitudes, knowledge, and skills currently recommended for residents in the area of risk management.” (AAP, 2013) The medical manager needs to have a well thought out plan in place. It starts with the people you hire.
