May Hogan English 27 Professor Tricia Lord “Self-discovery and Self-knowledge” Packed full of many elements of life, “Arranged Marriage” reveals stories about women and their disguised path of self-discovery and self-knowledge. Most of the women in these stories have been uprooted from their sheltered homes in India to be immersed in a culture foreign to them for strict matrimonial purposes; not to explore who they are or what they could be, but to perform a duty that many others before them have been forced to do. The preparation for their arranged adult life begins at a young age, they are taught through fairy tales that they too would get married to a handsome prince who will take her to his kingdom beyond the seven seas They are also taught the importance of duty and being a good wife and so, when the day comes when they become a wife they will not question the matchmaker choice when she sees her husband for the first time. And on her day of marriage her path to discovery and knowledge
