2AbstractCommunity health is monitored, maintained, and changed by community health nurses in small rural communities. Bucklin, a small town in the southwest part of Kansas is a rural, agriculture centered place where everyone knows everyone. With a population of nearly 800 people, nearly 20% over the age of 65, elderly citizens can suffer disparities that can be easily overlooked by the younger citizens. It is crucial that the elderly citizens be able to maintain their independence and remain active community members.
3Bucklin, Kansas Windshield SurveyBucklin is located in the Southwest portion of Kansas. It is a small town with an average population of 750-800 people. Bucklin was founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1909. Unified School District (USD) 459 serves the community as the only school present in the town. The class sizes at USD 459, Bucklin Elementary and Bucklin High School is approximately 15-25 students per grade level. The School Mascot is the Red Aces. There are two banks in town, a library and one restaurant that changes ownership every few years. The Mayor of Bucklin worksfull time at the school as a custodian. There is one health clinic that is run by a neighboring town’s hospital district, that has two physicians, two physician assistants, and four nurse practitioners. Typically, patients are seen by only one health provider most days of the week. The majority of the town in south of US Highway 54, and Kansas Highway 34 doubles as main street. Most of the Businesses in Bucklin are situated on Main Street. According to the 2010 census, the population in Bucklin is 93.3% white, 1.9% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 1% Other. The Hispanic/Latino population in Bucklin is 4% (DADS, 2010). Bucklin is primarily a farming community. It has a large, family owned, farming equipment business, a nursing home, a restaurant, a convenience store, a couple of auto repair places, two banks, a couple insurance companies, a hardware store, a consignment store, a small grocery/sundry store, a library, post office, a health clinic, and a school. The town’s people are primarily farmers/ranchers. Agriculture is the foundation of this small town. The town has a local agriculture pilot with a small private airport and a Cooperative that houses grains and carries agricultural supplies for the farmers. The town has a park and a city pool for entertainment and activity. There is a legion building, that hosts many of the community’s
