MIS 245-101 Intro. to MIS Prof. Jose C. Casal NJIT Fall 2008 Name: Carrie Ann Deis Case: 5-1 Date: 10/27/08 What makes an intranet effective varies company to company. Every company has its own specific needs. In general, intranets are private computer networks within an organization that allow employees to share information securely. Five basic characteristics of an effective intranet site are good planning, relevant content, standardization, simplification, and understanding of the intranet and how it works. Planning is the most crucial of the five characteristics. If an intranet is not planned out well it will not meet the needs of the organization and the other four characteristics do not matter. Planning ahead for the future of the company is also extremely important. Management changes frequently in many organizations so the intranet must be planned out to prepare for this change.
