CH.7 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY *Global Business & Environmental Sustainability -Environmental Sustainability: Economic growth that maintains the environment for future Generations. -Humans may now be consuming more than our planet can replace. -Basic causes include: -rich nation (esp. US) consumption *Threats to Sustainability -local pollution of air, water, &land -depletion of nonrenewable resources -depletion of renewable resources -defrestation -overgrazing & soil loss -declining fisheries -ecosystem destruction & loss of biodiversity -global warming *Ecological Footprint concept combines areas needed for: -cropland -grazing land -forest products -fishing grounds -sustainable use of energy -built-up land *Global Business & Sustainability: Critical Views -global companies exploit weak laws & despoil local environments in developing countries -long distance trade is itself polluting -ships & seaports -cargo aircraft -diesel trucks -western consumerism should be discouraged in the less affluent world
