Time and memory constraints must be taken into account in order to achieve these objectives. Quadtrees and octrees are data structures that optimize some implementations when dealing with these two issues. This report examines the configuration of quadtrees and octrees. Then it describes some common, real-world implementations that utilize these two data structures. Finally, it highlights some advantages and disadvantages of each. 1 Introduction The first part of this report discusses quadtrees and their basic features. It provides a brief explanation of its introduction to the computer engineering world. Next, it considers some important benefits as well as major drawbacks. The data structure is unique, but there are several familiar applications that call upon the quadtree because of its distinctive characteristics. The second half of this report looks at all of these aspects as they relate to octrees, a data structure very similar to that of the quadtree. 2 Quadtrees The quadtree made its introduction to the computing world when Raphael Finkel and J. L. Bentley published their article, “Quadtrees, A Data Structure for Retrieval on Composite Keys”, in Acta Informatica on April 8, 1974. Figure 1
