Effect Of pH On Population Growth in Yeast Courtney Mitzak Oceanna DeBaro Dr. Paulson Principles of Biology I 15 February 2007 Introduction: The significance of this lab was to determine the effect of pH on yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) colony growth over a period of time. The effect that pH has on yeast causes changes to occur in the yeast causing harmful substances to be released. These pH changes or shifts are caused by the environment (Campbell and Reece 2005). The purpose of this lab is to find the absorbance and density of yeast over a period of time and see what the effect of pH has on yeast (Hurd 2006). For example, “a change in pH of a stream due to acid rain from pH 6 to pH 5 may not seem like a significant changed unless you understand that this corresponds to a ten-fold increase in acidity (Hurd 2006). The prediction for this lab is that as more time elapses the absorbance will become greater causing the density to also increase and also that the higher pH will cause a greater
