Understanding the problem means that one should first read the problem, locate the questions we have to answer, think of any pictures that could help him/her understand what’s being asked, and asking another question to get the answers. Devising a plan asks that you find some connection towards the information given to the person and the unknown variable in order to get the answer. The methods used for this step includes solving an equation, guess and check, looking for a pattern, working backwards, and eliminating possibilities. Carrying out the plan goes back to step two, which means use the chosen method. Also checking the work along the way is a part of this step as well.
