Unformatted text preview: 1Alison Smith October 20, 2008 Research Writing MWF- 11-11:50 AM Bono is known mostly as a rock star, but according to him, he is a “rock star with a cause.” During the commencement speech he gave at the University of Pennsylvania in May of 2004, he talks about his organization, the ONE campaign, which provides aid to Africans. He also encourages the graduates to work for their own cause, even if it is not the one he supports. He uses several techniques, including humor and repetition, to make his message clear and memorable to the audience. He avoids preaching to the audience and instead talks to them almost conversationally. Bono begins his contestation by telling the audience about himself. However, he does not let the audience believe that he is just a rock star that is overly confident. Instead, he uses self deprecating humor to introduce himself.
