In the following letter to the editor, the author is chastising the McCain/Palin  campaign for mocking Senator Jo Biden’s comments about people feeling patriotic when  they pay their taxes.  The author would like us to believe that he too feel patriotic when  he has to pay taxes even though it is required by law. The author is using the simile that paying taxes is the same as being patriotic. I personally think that the effectiveness of this simile depends upon who the  reader is.  In my view it is a really weak comparison.  Having been a veteran of a foreign  war, I do not make the same correlation about patriotism as the author does when it  comes to my taxes.  This was especially true while I was paying taxes on a very meager  salary while I was in the Persian Gulf for the first war.  However I can see how this could  be effective for other individuals. The author here is saying that paying taxes makes him feel like he is patriotic
