I. Introduction A. Any immigrant will have their own struggles in adjusting to their new country and home. B. In Julia Alvarez’s classic novel, How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents , readers follow the Garcias on their journey to assimilating in America from the Dominican Republic. The main characters consist of the four Garcia sisters: Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofia, along with Mami and Papi. Each chapter deals with a different story of the Garcia family members. The chronological order of the book goes back in time, allowing the audience to understand the events leading up to the Garcias leaving the Dominican Republic to arriving in America and learning to assimilate into the country and its culture with time. There are many problematic situations that occur along the way to the Garcia sisters because of cultural differences in the United States than what they were used to. The second eldest, Sandra, appears to have a hard time finding herself and her purpose in America. Third sister Yolanda seems to have had the most issues adjusting to the American way because of the cultural differences as well as her different personality. C. Julia Alvarez uses the Garcia family to show that cultural assimilation causes confusion of identity, gender roles, and language. II. Body Paragraph #1

Significance: Sandra has been told, since she was young, that she was the prettiest out of her sisters and that she has the “good blood” in the family, stemming from her Swedish great-great grandmother.
