Bonding lowers the potential energy between positive and negative particles. 2. Three types of chemical bonding : metal-metal, metal-nonmetal, nonmetal- nonmetal. Identify a metal from nonmetal by position on the periodic table. a. Metal + nonmetal: electron transfer and ionic bonding. Likely to happen between atoms with large tendencies to lose or gain electrons, group 1,2, 16,17. b. Nonmetal+nonmetal: electron sharing and covalent bonding. Each atom still holds on tightly to its own electrons but also attracts valence electrons from another. Paired shared electrons spend most of time between the 2 atoms. c. Metal+metal: electron pooling and metallic bonding: metal atoms are large, shielded and lose electrons easily. Many metal atoms together will have a pool of valence electrons that float around ALL of the metal atoms. So metallic bonds atoms share electrons that are
