S1. 1. The central characteristic that makes something a successful symbol is if it represents some- thing else and has a shared meaning. 2. Folkways are different from laws because folkways don't have a moral significance attached to them unlike the law which is written rules of conduct enacted and enforce mores essential to social stability. 3. I do think folkways are necessary for our culture because they're the unwritten rules of soci- ety that keep us somewhat balanced. I think they're just as essential as the law because they both work hand in hand to keep order. S2. 1 The most common way culture change takes places is cultural diffusion. 4. Ethnocentrism is when you view your own culture/group as superior. It is different from cul- tural relativism because cultural relativism believes everyone's culture is equal. 5. The existence of counterculture is valuable to society because it adds diversity. In a way, counterculture is apart of culture. Yes, it may seem as if the two are different, but in this case
