10-28-08 Chronological age- when you were born Functional Age - observable attributes such as physical appearance, strength, coordination mental capacity -Decrease in birth rate and increase in life expectancy leads to aging of US pop. -1900-4% over 65, 1980-11%, 2002-14%, 2050-20% Life expectancy-average number of years group of ppl born in same year expect to live Cohort- group of ppl born w/in specified period of time. Gerontology- study of aging/ older people Social gerontology - study of social aspects of aging, including societal consequences of aging pop. And personal experiences. -ppl assigned diff roles/ positions based on age structure in particular society -age structure- number of ppl of each age level -role structure- number and type of positions available to each age level. Preindustrial societies-ppl of all ages expected to share work. Contrib. of older ppl valued Industrial societies- older ppl expected to retire so younger ppl can take their place Age stratification- inequalities, differences, segregation or conflict btwn age groups.
