10-23-08 Objectification - treating people as if they were objects or things. -judge people based on physical appearance rather than qualities/actions sex - biological differences between males and females -at birth infants distinguished by primary sex characteristics: genetalia -secondary sex characteristics- distinguished by puberty -Identifying sexuality- sexual attraction or sexual involvement to persons of own gender, self-identification as gay or bi. Gender - culturally and socially constructed differences between sexes found in beliefs and practices associated with femininity and masculinity -embedded in images, ideas, languages. Used to divide work, allocate resources, distribute power Gender role - attitudes, behavior, activities that are defined as appropriate for each sex and learned through socialization -in US society, males expected to be aggressive and females to be passive/ nurturing. -gender identity- perception of self as male of female
