Sociology- 10-21-08 Sociologists use concept of social distance to measure prejudice -Social Distance- extent to which ppl are willing to interact/ establish relationships with members of different racial/ ethnic groups. Discrimination - involves actions of dominant group w/ harmful impact on other group. -individual discrim- one on one acts of discrim -institutional discrim- practices of organizations that have harmful impact on subordinate group members. 1. Isolate discrim-prejudiced judge giving harsher sentence to black person. 2. small group discrim- small group of whites defacing teachers office w/ racial slurs 3. direct institutionalized discrim- intentional exclusion of ppl of color 4. Indirect institutionalized discrim- special ed classes contributing to racial sterrotyping Contact hypothesis-contact bwtn divergent groups should be pos as long as both: have equal status, pursue same goals, cooperate w/ one another, receive pos feedback. Fuctionalists on race/ ethnic relations
