The wartime alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union soon gave way after World War II to a bitter and intense conflict known as Cold War 9. The revolution that occurred in Russia in 1917 was led by this person V. I. Lenin 10. For 30 years, the Soviet Union remained the sole world outpost of an alternative to Capitalism 11. The population of the world in 1900 was 1.6 Billion 12. The balance of power of the “Great Powers” in the early twentieth century was upset by the by the emergence of Germany 13. The total loss of life during World War 1 between 1914 and 1918 was 10 Million 14. This means a conflict of an entire society, not simply their military forces but all aspects of the society.
