Jeffrey D’Arrigo Ethics journal PHL 212 Kant readings from (9/11-9/18) Section 1 The introduction of “Good Will”, “Duty”, and the transition from Common Sense Knowledge of Morals to the Philosophical Kant’s foundations of the meta physics of morals is ideally a critique of the modern day rational beings’ sense of “duty”, and how to come to understand this duty and what it is based off. He starts his argument by saying that nothing can be called good in this world besides a good will. He also states that good will is determined by practical pure reason. What I initially interpreted this to mean was good will as an inner feeling or motive to do what is right. Right being in the sense that it will provide the ultimate good. He goes on to explain that this Goodwill cannot be firmly and universally applied unless there is a strict code of laws or a foundation in which to base the will or ‘’duty” on. This foundation he bases on a categorical imperative. Before Kant gets to in depth with this concept of the categorical imperative Kant first establishes his principles for morality, and his explanation of the intrinsic sense of right and wrong, and why you should choose what you do. 1) To be genuinely moral, actions must be done from Duty (feeling dutifulness) 2) Duty’s have moral worth dependent on motive not consequence. 3) Duty is the obligation to act out of respect for a moral law. “Pure ethics cannot merely describe the way we actually behave.” Imperative is the judgment to which we refer in deciding on out action, Kant talks about developing a will that’s good in itself without regard to anything else. Reflections Kant has a good interpretation of morals and I think he addresses some key issues with the human intuition and decision making process. How should we live our life and what should we base our decisions off of. It is not easy to describe what we think as humans or what makes us do what we do. Kant believes strongly that a true duty uninfluenced by anything else needs to be the basis for how we are to determine our ends. I like how he stresses that Duty should be this over powering feeling separate from self-desire, and more geared toward what is good. Section 2 Transition from popular moral philosophy to the metaphysics of morals. This sections dives much deeper into Kant's description of the categorical imperative. In this sense, he compares hypothetical imperatives, and moral imperatives, as well as “skill imperatives”. Traditionally or more popularly, philosophers and people alike have found it difficult or impossible to prove that an action can be done purely out of reason and by pure duty. There is always doubt whether the action is actually done out of pure duty and has moral worth, this can also show flaw in the emotive theory, how can ones motives
