Describe the 3 roles of liporoteins. Explain the effect of dietary cholesterol on cholesterol synthesis. Explain how dietary and lifestyle factors affect HDL and LDL levels. State desirable cholesterol levels. Discuss the functions of essential FAs have that reduce the risk for CVD? Explain how sugar, fiber, alcohol, sodium effect risk for CHD? Also calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C? Cardiovascular Disease Cardiovascular Disease (Definition): disease of the heart and blood vessels Also called Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Hypertension and Atherosclerosis are the most common types of CVD- they often occur together and together can cause very serious and life threatening illness Hypertension : high blood pressure 1. Strains vessels walls 2. Puts strain on the heart Atherosclerosis Disease characterized by a hardening of the vessel walls Characterized by PLAQUES = soft fatty streaks on the inner walls of arteries, especially at the branch points Possible consequences of atherosclerosis : 1. Aneurysm 2. Blood Clots thrombus = stationary clot thrombosis = stationary clot that has cut off the blood vessel embolus = clot that breaks free and travels embolism = when embolus become trapped in a smaller blood vessel Consequences of an Embolism : Stroke Heart attack Blood clot in the lungs - 1 -
