Investigation Questions 1. What are the observed melting points of the different samples and how do their intramolecular forces have an effect on this? 2. Are polar compounds more or less likely to have higher melting points? 2. How does polarity affect the possibility or rate of solubility? 3. How do polar and nonpolar compounds differ in solubility? Procedure Part 1 Melting Points Researched: Sucrose: 186°C (366.8°F) Benzoic Acid: 122.4°C (252.3°F) Naphthaline: 80.2°C (176.4°F) 2-Naphthol: 120 - 122 °C (248 - 252 °F) Phenol: 40 - 42 °C (104 - 108 °F) - 1. A small amount of sample will be placed on a watch glass and crushed to a fine powder using a micro-spatula. 2. Small amounts the sample will be put into the capillary tubes by tapping the open end on the sample. 3. The capillary tube will then be dropped in a long glass tube which is placed on a solid surface so that the sample is tightly packed. 4. The thermometer and capillary tube is placed in the Mel-temp and the dial is changed according to expected melting points. 5. Sample is observed for state changes from solid to liquid and liquid to gas. Procedure Part 2 Hazards: Least polarity to most polarity -Hexanes: hazardous for inhalation, indigestion, and contact; flammable -Dichloromethane: hazardous for inhalation, indigestion, and contact; slightly flammable -Ethyl Acetate: hazardous for exposure and inhalation; extremely flammable -Ethanol: hazardous for exposure and inhalation, extremely flammable -Water: none 1. About 1 mL of each substance above will be placed into five different test tubes using a plastic dropper. 2. Colored tape will be used to label the solvents. 3. One of the substances from part one will be taken using a micro-spatula measuring to about a scoop and placed in each of the solvents. 4. The reaction should be observed and recorded once the two are mixed by swirling. 5. All compounds will go through this entire process and observations will be recorded on each one. Safety: 1. Avoid inhalation, indigestion, and contact with Dichloromethane, Ethyl Acetate, Ethanol, and Hexanes. These are hazardous to the body and caution should be taken when working with them. Also avoid breaking glass in order to avoid the danger of cutting yourself when working with the capillary tubes.
