9/13/07 HCOMM 100 Journal: Assertiveness 1. Concerning assertiveness, I’m typically non-assertive. I tend to try to avoid confrontation and therefore I don’t stand up for my needs and rights as much as I should. This can sometimes lead me to getting “stepped on” by other people. 2. I learned a tremendous amount during the in-class practice session. I felt very comfortable using the 8 guidelines for being assertive and I thought it was an excellent way to obtain your needs and the needs of others. I did have a little trouble staying away from using “but” in my sentences but now that I’ve practiced, I feel very comfortable using this skill in everyday communication. 3. I didn’t actually think I would ever approach my roommate about how he annoys me when he blows his nose in the shower, but thanks to the assertiveness workshop, I mustered the strength to do it. My sound byte went a little something like this: “I know

I really care about our relationship and I know you’ve been a great roommate and also a caring friend. When you blow your snot in the shower, I feel pretty gross stepping into the tub knowing that you recently blew your nose in it. What can we do about this Oscar?” After I said that, I listened to him and made direct eye contact. He was really cool about it and said he would wait until he was done showering to blow his nose. 4. I feel that my use of the assertiveness skill was very effective in this situation. I followed the 8 guidelines for being assertive and that helped out tremendously.
