Social Policy Decisions Paper 2One of the most influential and popular nonprofit organizations in America is Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The problem of drunk driving has always been an issue that has not been addressed here in America. As so the case when 13-year-old Cari Lightner was hit and killed as she walked to a church carnival with a friend on a quiet road in a California suburb. Cari’s murder, Clarence Busch, a drunk driver, had a record of numerous arrests for intoxication, and was out on bail for another hit and run charge less than a week prior. Busch was only charged with vehicular homicide and eventually served 21 months in jail for driving drunk and killing someone’s child.The injustices of victims of drunk drivers compelled Cari’s mother, Candace “Candy” Lightner, a real estate agent, to create the group Mothers Against Drunk Drivers also known as MADD the day after her daughter’s funeral. The name was her sister’s ideal and her family also was involved in organizing. Candace’s mission for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) was not just to notify, but convince society that driving under the influence was a serious crime and the devastating results of the decision to drive under the influence were not “accidents”. MADD became incorporated Sept. 5, 1980, it would have been Cari’s 14thbirthday. Fueled by the tragic event, MADD got to work. It was not easy at first and they had a lot to change.
