GERMANY- BOOK NOTES 20/09/2006 15:14:00 The German State The success of German democracy rest on Basic Law in the late 1940’s and just  as important on CORPORATISM- in which the government and ket interst groups work  behind closed doors to forge integrated economic policies Chancellor Democracy The ch. Started out literally as the prime minister, the first among equally  powered cabinet members However the power grew so much that being the first among equals notion  disappeared The conflicts that arose between the chancellor and president were among  the Weimars many flaws Chancellor hold real power, president more symbolic The ch and members of the cabinet also are members of the Bundestag and  may remain in power as long as they have the confidence of the parliament  majority or until 4 years end Chancellor has the power to determine the guidelines of policy and to assume
