Mao was not a very good economic leader, and led the PRC through a series of economic failures Mao was still an extremely powerful individual in the PRC, and held a majority of the control in the communist party of China. During this same year, the Peoples Republic of China was admitted to the United Nations, and was given a permanent position on the Security Council TAIWAN In 1949, the defeated Kaomintang (more democratic) retreated to the island of Taiwan, and set up the Republic of China UN recognized the Republic of China until 1972 when PRC replaced it.
