AbstractZinc Iodide was synthesized by reacting a known mass of iodine with an excess of zinc in order to determine the masses of the product and the leftover zinc. By combining granular zinc metal with elemental iodine and dissolving them in slightly acidic aqueous solution of acetic acid, zinc iodide was synthesized. After, the masses of zinc iodide and the left-over zinc metal can be obtained, allowing the amount of zinc and iodine reacting to be compared with the products of the reaction. Based on the results, it was determined that the chemical formula of zinc iodide was ZnI2.Results and DiscussionMass of empty beaker:79.803 gMass of beaker and zinc:81.865 g mass of zinc:2.062 gMass of beaker zinc and iodine: 82.882 g mass of iodine:1.017 gMass of beaker and stone:91.386 gMass of dry beaker and zinc:81.595 g mass of dry zinc:1.792 gMass of beaker w/ zinc iodide:92.615 g mass of zinc iodide: 1.229 g In order to determine the empirical formula of zinc iodide, the number of moles of each of the reactants were determined. For zinc, the amount of the dry zinc at the end of the
