Abstract Zinc Iodide was synthesized by reacting a known mass of iodine with an excess of zinc in order to determine the masses of the product and the leftover zinc. By combining granular zinc metal with elemental iodine and dissolving them in slightly acidic aqueous solution of acetic acid, zinc iodide was synthesized. After, the masses of zinc iodide and the left-over zinc metal can be obtained, allowing the amount of zinc and iodine reacting to be compared with the products of the reaction. Based on the results, it was determined that the chemical formula of zinc iodide was ZnI 2 .
