Patel 1 Hasmi Patel Cultural Anthropology Paper 3 Dr. Hudgins Representation and Ethnographers The articles “The Nuer” by Evans-Pritchards and “Nuer Ethnicity Militarized” by Hutchinson are ethnographies based on observation and research. Both were constructed in different time periods about the same group of people. Comparing the two articles and the different viewpoints that are presented many differences appear when the ethnographers are representing the Nuer people. While one presents them as people who are hard to communicate and integrate with, the other represents them as a tool the outside world uses for its own benefits and agenda. Evans-Pritchards presents the Nuer as people who are all about their cows and cattle. Their cows shape their world and are part of every aspect of their life ranging from their names to their food supply. As an ethnographer he just observes the Nuer based on his European mentality. He tries to make the place comfortable for him by bringing servants and food along
