2 INTRODUCTION Previously, we have mentioned about the moment about a point and the moment along an axis. We haven’t paid much attention to the resistance of the rigid body. The resistance of the body is a physical quantity of the body to resist the change of the external force on the body. For instance, for the rotation tendency caused by the moment, we will define a corresponding physical quantity for the resistance to the rotation tendency imposed by the moment on the body. This is what we are trying to introduce the concept of the second moment of area in this lecture. One the other hand, since the rotation around some specific axis is far more important to the rotation around the point in most engineering structures, we will introduce the corresponding resistance along the same axis specified. In engineering practice, we will see a lot of expressions of the second moment of quantities in engineering applications. These second moments of quantities include the second moment of areas 2 A x dA
