The collapse of European colonial empires eliminated political barriers to trade. 2. New technologies increased production and allowed transportation systems to move goods and people at lower costs. 3. Development of information and communications technology. Demographic Changes Medical advances resulted in lowered infant mortality rates, eradicated deadly diseases, and lengthened life expectancy. In last 50 years, world population has jumped from 2.5 billion to 6 billion. Most of the population growth is in Third World countries. Distribution of Wealth Since 1980, the average per capita income in more than 1/3 of the world’s countries has declined. 1.2 billion people survive on incomes of less than $1 per day. 800 million people suffer from mal-nutrition. Distribution of Wealth The assets of the 3 richest billionaires in the world exceed those of the poorest 600 million people. The richest 200 people have a combined wealth that exceeds the annual income of the poorest 2.4 billion people. Miniature Earth
