ISS 215-Hussein 09/01/2008 09:45:00 Orientation for Service Learning- Julie Golding- Golding3@msu.edu Thursday January 10 th  at 5:00 pm room B102 wells hall Friday January 11 th  10:00 am 129 in Brody hall Monday January 14 th  1:00 room 144 D in Brody hall January 15 th  1:45 in room 137 Akers hall January 16 th  11:00 room 226 Erickson  Friday January 18 th  3:00 room 128 natural science building Requirements : write  2 reflection papers  based on the type of things you do at service  learning linking one of the topics to what you are learning in class. One of the papers is  in the beginning and one at the end-a before and after in your though process-in  addition you will write a journal of what you did each day- 1 page diary for each service  day. A portfolio that he needs- has 2 hard copies of the reflection papers-then  hard copies of the journals and a hard copy of the student evaluation. January 14, 2007-                                Structural Functional Perspective A. Structural functionalism- Looks at the social system as an integrated whole (that in every society  people depend on each other for certain things). It suggests that both parts  and whole are functional and produce equilibrium. Functionality may be : Individual- your link to society using the system

Interpersonal- the needs that are related with social relations. The structure  helps fulfill this. Societal-politics are related to economy. B.  Main Features Society as an integrated whole Systematic- can have a very good or poor system for their society. Individuals are indispensable Temporary imbalances- ex. Natural disasters, wars, the great depression,  9/11. You always come out of the imbalances. Dysfunctional elements leading to social integration and equilibrium- ex.  Criminal are dysfunctional elements however, they give people like cops and  lawyers jobs to make a living. Ex 2. The unity that came out of 9/11. Social change is evolutionary- Social integration through legitimization of social, economic, and political  structure Social stratification is good C. Pioneers August Comte (1798-1857) o Organic Whole o Individuals are functional o Equilibrium Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) o Social Organicism Growth and development Increase in size leading to increase in complexity and  differentiation.

He thought that if you want to create and ideal society by  eliminating all the dysfunctional people in the society so that you  are only left with the good people. He made a point to say no  handicap people because he said they are dysfunctional. Differentiation in structure leading to differentiation in function.
