Kylie Wesson English 11 Mr. Mooney 5/17/2017 World War I and American Literature World War I had an immense influence on American Literature and American writers in a number of ways. The effects of the Great War ranged from economic, political, and social impacts on the United States. America emerged as the world industrial leader due to the increase of manufacturing and production needed for the war. The economy was booming and the Roaring Twenties came with a substantial rise in consumerism for the wealthy. Though there were numerous positives, the negative came as high inflation. Workers were compelled to write in the style of realism and simplicity to express what the American Society was becoming. American writers turned to realism to show the American life in an impartial and authentic light. Often writers would include a solution to such suffering that came from the war. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a jazz age author who wrote the classic novel, “The Great Gatsby” which shows realism in the plot, settings, and characters. The plot provides situations that are plausible and applicable to the readers. The main plot in the novel is the idea of the ‘American Dream’ that Jay Gatsby is chasing after. The American Dream is something that a lot of people sought after during that time and to this day. Throughout the story Fitzgerald includes realistic and relatable situations like the affair of Tom Buchanan has with Myrtle. Another plot that Fitzgerald includes to show realism is the death of Jay Gatsby, “The touch of a cluster of leaves revolved it slowly,
