With the ever present oppression from the British and the continuous streak of poverty, things were very hard for his family. One of the things that the British at this time were trying to get rid of was the Irish Gaelic language. Something that Martin was very fluent in and tried to keep alive. He would teach it to anyone willing to learn, and used it in his every day life. This open and continuous use of this forbidden language, caught up with him. At age 16 Martin was captured by the British and thrown in jail, making him one of Irelands youngest political prisoners of his time. Once in jail he continued to teach it to his inmate in hopes to keep it alive After he was released from jail probably about three years later, he decided it was time to join the mass and travel to America. At age 19 an independent Martin got on a boat to America where he met his wife Bina Collins. Once in America they lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Of course things werent easy at first, they werent for any immigrant especially the Irish. Struggling to make something for their family Bina worked as a housemaid for a wealthy family and Martin did a variety of physical jobs open to immigrants. Crowe After a few years working in Boston Martin became a Boston Police officer. Also they started a family and moved to Somerville, a small town just minutes away from Boston where they had 9 kids.
