Psych 101 Module 15 Other Important Senses 14/10/2007 22:53:00 Our sense of touch is a mix of at least four distinct skin senses- pressure, warmth,  cold, and pain.   Warm +cold = hot Phantom limb sensations- 7 in 10 amputees may feel pain or movement in  nonexistent limbs. Phantom sounds- ringing in the ears= tinnitus.   Gate-control theory-  the theory that the spinal cord contains a neurological “gate”  that blocks pain signals or allows them to pass on to the brain.  The gate is opened  by the activity of pain signals traveling up small nerve fibers and is closed by activity
