Ali 1 Survey of the Animal kingdom Phyla Mollusca and Annelida Introduction: Both Phyla Mollusca and Annelida are a coelomate organisms. Mollusca such as animals as clams, snails, slugs, and octopuses. Annelida such as earthworms, leeches, and seaworms. They have a coelomic body cavity surrounded by mesoderm and containing complex systems of organs and compartments. Coelomates are further divided into protostomes and deuterostomes. Phyla Molluska and Annelida are protostomes and have well-developed systems of nerves, circulation, excretion, reproduction and digestion. The Mollusca body plan is characterized by three distinct sections, a unique rasping tongue and distinctive free-swimming larvae also found in annelid worms. Three majors classes of Mollusca are the gastropods (snails and slugs), the bivalves (oysters and clams), and the cephalopods (octopuses and squids).
