BME 423 HOMEWORK SET #3 FALL 2008 1. Pulmonary function is assessed in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency by measuring the Vital Capacity (VC) of the lungs. The values of VC (in L) are given below for 8 patients: Patient #: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 VC: 4.4 3.6 4.1 3.9 4.2 3.7 4.3 3.5 Determine the 95% confidence intervals for the population mean value of VC in chronic respiratory insufficiency. 2. A study was done to compare the reaction times of two pain medications: Tylenol and Motrin. Tylenol: n = 20, mean duration = 4.0h, std. dev = 3.5h Motrin: n = 20, mean duration = 4.5h, std. dev = 3.2hr Find the 95 percent confidence interval for the difference in the mean duration of reaction in people treated with Tylenol gel compared with people treated with Motrin gel. Based on this confidence interval, is the difference statistically significant with P< .05? 3. Data from 11 study subjects from a larger study are shown in the table below. For each subject their age in years is given along with their systolic blood pressure in mmHg.
