They stocked up on diapers during the year of the monkey, because the Chinese believe that to be a lucky year to reproduce. The biggest cultural hurdle Wal-Mart had to cross was accepting organized labor. Organized labor is important to the Chinese, and the Chinese government. To them it secures social order and strengthens their communist party. A recent move Wal-Mart made to further ensure its success was to replace the Sam Walton of China with a big Hong-Kong retail executive. China is looking to take over Chinese chains similar to theirs, and with their new native ways the ability to do so looks promising and profitable. I think it was very important for Wal-Mart to realize that it isnt their job to Americanize the Chinese, but to adjust to their ways.
