Unit Four: Political Economy Part B: General Case Studies Article 22: The Great Wal-Mart Of China To move into China, America’s biggest and most successful retailer had to learn its business all over again Keith Naughton Wal-Mart moved into China in the early 1990s, but did not experience the extreme success they have here in America. Just as they did in other countries, Wal-Mart failed to notice the demand, product-wise and service-wise, from the surrounding environment. This mistake caused them to lose over one billion dollars and shut down those chains. However, they haven’t given up in China, yet. They have recently started “going native”. Initially customers were offended by the Styrofoam-wrapped food and already killed fish. Once Wal-Mart recognized this, as well as other cultural necessities, its success began to climb. They now have fresh fish daily that the customers may catch out of the aquariums themselves, as well as smaller details such as moisturizers

They stocked up on diapers during the year of the monkey, because the Chinese believe that to be a lucky year to reproduce. The biggest cultural hurdle Wal-Mart had to cross was accepting organized labor. Organized labor is important to the Chinese, and the Chinese government. To them it “secures social order” and strengthens their communist party. A recent move Wal-Mart made to further ensure its success was to replace the “Sam Walton of China” with a big Hong-Kong retail executive. China is looking to take over Chinese chains similar to theirs, and with their new native ways the ability to do so looks promising and profitable. I think it was very important for Wal-Mart to realize that it isn’t their job to Americanize the Chinese, but to adjust to their ways.
