1 EE 200 Hybrid Systems A hybrid system links systems modeled as state machines with those modeled as time-bases systems. State machines can be used to model systems and have some benefits and drawbacks. Similarly, time-based methods (such as LTI models) are also used to model systems and also have pros and cons. A hybrid system combine state machines and time- based system into a single system that uses the capabilities of both.

4 EE 200 Hybrid Systems The states of the state machine are the modes the hierarchical system can be in. The time-based system for each state is the refinement of the state and determines what the system will do in that state. Simple example: an AM/FM radio has two modes: AM and FM. Each mode requires separate receiver circuitry (the time-based system) in order to perform the actions in that mode.
