Book Brooke Book Hagop Ohanessian History 11 18 April 2017 Primary Source: Declaration of Independence In 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, he wrote it so that it would help determine America’s values and its freedom . The thirteen colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain while proclaiming their loyalty to the crown . The Declaration of Independence was and continues to be one of the most important and major documents in the United States history. It challenged the monarch of the Britain King and the British Parliament by uniting the colonists and motivating them all to fight for their "unalienable rights , " which are "Life , Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" (Thomas Jefferson). Which means that the government should protect those rights and have the people run the government. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson expresses his concerns and disagreements with the king and he uses a list of grievances and allusions to natural laws to argue that England has violated the social contract. The Declaration of Independence purpose was to declare the thirteen colonies in American independent from Great Britain and overthrow King George III. The king was interfering with the colonists ' right to self-government and for a fair judicial system. He is also responsible for several abuses to the colonists as well. Also, the king was unjust with the laws, taxes , trading, and protection for the thirteen colonies. After, the colonies still wished for 1

Book reconciliation with Great Britain even after everything the king and the Parliament put them through. The Declaration of Independence opens up with a preamble, which was written by John Adams, describing why the thirteen colonies wanted to overthrow King George III. The colonial government tried reaching out to Great Britain so they could agree on a peaceful reconciliation.
