Although Magellan went first and Drake followed in his footsteps. The two faced many problems but also made may discoveries. Although they traveled almost the same path they had their differences. These voyages in the 1500’s created many new things and brought many new discoveries to us. Their ways of handling situations were different and the risk they were willing to take were as well. I will start by writing about Ferdinand Magellan's Voyage that was from 1519 to 1522. One of the five ships of Magellan’s voyage was named Victoria, Victoria voyaged from Spain to the Philippines and returned with spices. Throughout the voyage of Magellan him and the crew were able to discover many things in different places. One big thing was spices, they were mostly used for flavoring and preserving food and also masked the taste of meat that had gone bad, some spices were spices cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and especially black pepper. One of Magellan’s well known crew members was Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian scholar, he accepted the title of "supernumerary2" and a modest salary. He became an assistant of Magellan and kept an accurate journal. While sailing down the coast of South America Magellan and his crew ran into a few problems. On minor problem was the climate change as they traveled south, the crew had to get used to colder weather. Sadly Magellan never made it back to Spain. Along with most of his crew his was killed during the expedition. In 1521, Magellan and his crew docked in the Philippines where they came in contact with a native tribe from Cebu Island3. The leader Rajah sail or travel all the way around (something, especially the world). a temporary employee, additional society member, or extra manpower, usually in a function which has a temporary contract. 3 Cebu is a province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas (Region VII) region 1 2 Humabon persuaded Magellan and his crew to assist them in attacking their enemy tribe. Magellan and his crew along with Humabon’s tribe traveled to Mactan Island4 to confront the enemy tribe. The Battle of Mactan started a few weeks after arrival. Even with the assistance of Magellan and his crew Humabon’s tribe was massively outnumbered. Magellan was killed by members of the enemy tribe. It is said that Magellan was struck with a bamboo spear to the head. After realising they were outnumbered, Magellan’s crew surrendered. Although many were killed during the battle, most of Magellan’s crew got back to the ships safely. Sir Francis Drake's Voyage around the World was from 1577 to 1580 Drake’s ship was named “The Golden Hind.” The main outcome of Drake’s voyage was a better understanding of the world and its land and seas. Drake was to lead an expedition around South America through the Straits of Magellan. The voyage had one big issue which was the conflict between Drake and the two other men who shared command. When they arrived off the coast of Argentina, Drake had one of the men Thomas Doughty arrested, and beheaded for allegedly plotting a mutiny5.
