Writing the Essay Essay 2 Draft 1 3/25/08 Great Expectations No one moves to Bronxville to be ordinary. In a bakery of life, Bronxville is crème brulee, wetting your appetite ever so slightly, tricking your taste buds into believing that ten dollars would be worth it’s tasteless sensation. It has a beautiful façade. Exquisite houses line the streets while picture perfect housewives sip on Starbucks, pondering the life altering question on how to fit palates and tennis on the same schedule. As one could guess, growing up in there would not be so easy. Bronxville has its perks; the small town atmosphere lends to a cohesive knowledge of everyone’s background. Population dances below 4,000 as stockbrokers and their wives decide which million dollar house should be their next purchase. At the age of twelve I knew the surname attached to each lot. Yet, it was not the luxury cars that tied us, it was one brick building that held Bronxville together. It housed me for twelve years; promising to someday reward the residents for paying high property taxes. I went to the school building every morning, eagerly ready for a new piece of trivia that would never manage to stump my father. I was oblivious to the idea of a future beyond summer vacation. I was unaware of the microscope my neighbors held on me. I was only a child. This untainted view is what Walker Percy trumpets in his essay The Loss of the Creature . He paints lucid pictures of travelers, students and teachers. All of them exploring the world with preconceived notions hoping to someday grasp the truth. He
