Amelia Murphy Writing the Essay Style and Idea # 1 4/5/08 The topics an author chooses to write about are very telling. In theory the subjects and locations of stories reflect the author’s personal beliefs and ideals. This can be seen throughout Virginia Woolf’s writings. Many of her essays are based off of a female character. However independent they may seem on the outside, each of her protagonists are shaped and influenced by the environment that surrounds them. In many cases it is the men that suppress and control what the females believe. Yet, the way in which she portrays these relationships reveals her pro feminist attitude and disapproval of female suppression. Her essay ‘Three Pictures’ she follows the development of two young lovers reunited after a long separation. The sailor’s return home to his new wife marks a happy moment in Woolf’s essay. It is as though ‘everything was right and good and as it should be’. This soon changes. With an unbeknownst cry, the reader is informed
