Chem 230 Homework #1 Answer Key The answers given here are what we expected when writing the question. Some of the problems have a few paths to the correct solution and so these answers may differ slightly from answers you gave but still received credit for. 1) Considering the chemical formulas for the cobalt compounds given on page 329 of your textbook, discuss which is a stronger Lewis base, Cl - or NH 3 . In all of the compounds listed on page 329, NH 3 binds to the inner sphere preferentially over Cl - . As outer sphere coordination is more Ionic in nature and Inner sphere coordination is based more on electron donation, this would suggest that NH 3 is the stronger Lewis base. 2) Would the compound Co(NH 3 ) 6 · (Cl - ) 2 be paramagnetic or diamagnetic, include a drawing showing how the electrons would fill in the d orbitals. Since there is a -2 charge in the outer sphere, the inner sphere complex must have a +2 charge. Since NH3 is a neutral molecule, this would mean that the Co ion must be +2. The electron configuration of Co metal is 4s2 3d7 and in ions you begin removing
