The Franks’ point of view Marriage is a cultural construction, not a part of nature Different time and place produce different culture There is no legal definition of marriage in this time, no laws to regulate marriage To us, marriage is a form of recognition by the state. There 3 different types of cultural values that are coming together: Christian, Roman, Germanic. Each culture has its own values and definition of marriage. When do you decided if 2 people are married> o After a certain amount of sexual activity? o What are the differences between marriage and an affair/rape/drunken night? o Can two people get married, who didn’t have sex/live together? Defining marriage : 1. Economic relationship o Marriage that unites the fortune of 2 family Economic advantages 2. Sexual/reproductive 3. Love
