Ch. 14 Notes: Power and Politics o Power may exist but not be used it is capacity or potential o Power is a function of dependency: great B’s dependence on A, the greater is A’s power o Power doesn’t require goal compatibility, while leadership requires some compatibility beween goals of leader and those being led o Leadership focuses on downward influence on followers while power does not Bases of Power o Formal Power o Coercive: dependent on fear (of negative results) o Reward: people comply with wishes of another because it produces positive benefits (opposite of coercive) o Legitimate: in formal groups and organizations; represents the formal authority to control and use organizational resources o Personal Power o Expert: influence from expertise, special skill, or knowledge o Referent: power that develops out of admiration or another and a desire to be like that person o Personal sources are most effective o General Dependency Postulate o Dependency is inversely proportional to the alternative sources of supply
