Hypertension Hypertension is a very common disease known as high blood pressure. Many people have hypertension, however not many people are aware of risk factors, symptoms and signs, and treatment. There are many different ways to try to avoid having high blood pressure. Diet and exercise is a main treatment and should motivate many people in order to decrease the chance of getting hypertension. Once hypertension is diagnosed, it is a lifetime disease that will only get worse if not taken care of. Life modifications should be taken seriously to prevent any future diseases. Hypertension also known as high blood pressure is tension in the arteries that carry blood to the heart and the rest of the body (Cunha 1). The blood pressure is measured by using the systolic blood pressure, pressure of arteries as blood contracts, over the diastolic pressure, pressure of arteries as heart relaxes (Cunha 1). The normal blood pressure for all adults is below 120/80. Anything higher than that is considered high blood pressure (Cunha 1). Hypertension has many risk factors that individuals need to be aware of. The older an individual gets, the more susceptible they are to have hypertension. At about age 45 hypertension is more common in men, however, women tend to develop hypertension after age 65 (Mayo Clinic 1). Genetic traits have much to do with it also and hypertension usually runs in the family. African Americans have a higher rate of developing hypertension than whites. Serious and more severe complications can occur in African Americans with hypertension (Mayo Clinic 1). Being overweight and not physically active goes hand in hand and will increase the chances dramatically. The more
