Gibb’s TORI Theory (Communication behaviors that affect Trust, Opening, Realizing, Interdependence) Six communicative behaviors that affect communication climate. Think of these behaviors as moving on a continuum. No communication is always at one extreme or another. Defensive Climate Supportive Climate EVALUATION Communication that judges, “You” statements DESCRIPTION Communication that describes; “I” statements CERTAINTY Communication that is absolute, dogmatic PROVISIONALISM Communication that allows for other possibilities STRATEGY Communication that is manipulative, keeps motives and interests hidden SPONTANEITY Communication that is thought-out, but honest, straight-forward CONTROL Communication aimed at dominating others PROBLEM ORIENTATION Communication aimed at resolving tensions and problems NEUTRALITY Communication that implies indifference towards another EMPATHY Communication that indicates concern for another SUPERIORITY Communication that implies one is better that another EQUALITY Communication that implies respect and equivalent status
