ENGL essay #2 1. Nice Coloured Girls takes a postmodern approach to historical truth in order to contest  established white Australian narratives about colonialism. Discuss the ways in which  texts from the unit respond to, rewrite or reproduce historical narratives about Australia’s  past.  2. In 1989, the launch of the anthology The New Diversity: Australian Fiction 1970-88,  edited by Ken Gelder and Paul Salzman, appeared to herald the end of a singular or  dominant national voice in Australian literature, in favour of a newly diversified field,  open to the voices of many excluded social groups and identities. Discuss the ways in  which texts from this unit participate in this ‘new diversity’ or contest a singular national  Australian identity. 3. Margaret Henderson argues that, as a transgressive text, crossing genres and cultural  categories, The Monkey’s Mask is an example of an Australian feminist postmodernism.
