Lecture 4: Pandora ‘gift from all’ progenitress of all women in the world - very much of a male centered perspective - she is the link b/t women and men - structuralism: (advanced by Claude Levi-Strauss) - myth sets up a series of oppositions called “binary opposition” - ex. Night and day, opposition b/t men and women, men vs Gods - nature vs. culture culture interacting w/ natural world - myth tries to reconcile these oppositions (third term or mediation) - meaning of a myth is to be found in its structure (according to Strauss) - Prometheus story – opposition b/t God’s and men - explains origin of the institution of sacrifice (allows them to be connected) - institution of sacrifice mediates differences b/t men and Gods - men used domesticated animals in sacrifice (takes care of nature/culture opposition) - Prometheus takes Zeus fire and puts it into the culture - before Pandora there was just Gods and Men - Greeks are obsessed with shy they are not immortal - women provide men with mediation to become immortal (through lineage)
